You can be the one to initiate the conversation with your teen’s doctor and “Ask2BSure” about meningitis

The teen years are filled with special moments, such as prom, graduation, hanging out with friends, heading to college, getting a first job. They need you now more than ever.

You have the power to help protect these precious moments and be an advocate for your teen by knowing their meningococcal disease (known as meningitis) vaccination status. Ask your teen’s doctor if they are missing meningitis vaccination.

Is your teen fully vaccinated against meningitis?

Ask2BSure if they have been vaccinated against ALL 5 vaccine-preventable groups of meningitis—A, B, C, W, and Y.

According to CDC survey data from 2023, less than 13% of 17-year-olds received the recommended two-dose vaccination series for meningitis B, and only about 60% of teens were fully vaccinated against A, C, W, and Y. The decision to vaccinate against meningitis B is based on a discussion with your teen’s healthcare provider.

Don’t wait for your teen’s doctor to bring it up—be proactive. Ask to find out if your teen is missing vaccination against any of the 5 vaccine-preventable groups of meningitis.

Follow this plan to find out if your teen is missing any vaccinations and how to advocate on their behalf.

Before the Visit

Check Their Vaccination Records

  • If you’re not sure which meningitis vaccination(s) your teen has received, contact their doctor’s office and ask for your teen’s vaccination records.
  • There are different groups of meningitis vaccines available, meningitis A, C, W, and Y (MenACWY), meningitis B (MenB), and meningitis A, B, C, W, and Y (MenABCWY) vaccines. While many teens may have received meningitis vaccination for A, C, W, and Y when they were younger, they could still be missing additional meningitis vaccinations. So plan to ask your teen’s doctor about their meningitis vaccination options at their upcoming appointment.

During the Visit

Prioritize the Vaccination Discussion

  • If you think your teen may be missing vaccination against meningitis, ask their doctor about whether they are eligible to receive a meningitis vaccine during the appointment.
  • Before leaving the doctor’s office, schedule any follow-up appointments needed to complete your teen’s meningitis vaccination series.

After the Visit

Stay on Top of Vaccination Follow-Ups

  • Once you’ve booked any necessary follow-up appointments, set a calendar reminder so that it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle of your teen’s jam-packed schedule.

Important questions to ask your teen’s doctor about meningitis vaccinations:

Is my teen missing vaccinations against any of the 5 vaccine-preventable meningitis groups?

If yes, which meningitis vaccinations should my teen get today?

After today’s appointment, does my teen need to come back for additional doses? Schedule their next dose today.
